§ ITHE ENGINE: The Agitation-Search-Resolution Cycle
The fundamental cycle underlying all mental activity:
- Baseline state — calibrated homeostasis (NOTE: this is NOT universal calm. It is whatever the system was calibrated to. A system calibrated to high stress treats calm as deviation.)
- Deviation — any movement away from calibrated baseline. Fires SEEKING. Dopamine rises. System enters search mode.
- Search — dopamine-driven scanning for resolution. NOT searching for a specific object. Searching for "whatever resolves the deviation." The search IS the primary experience. The wanting is more neurochemically active than the having.
- Resolution — deviation corrected. Dopamine drops (search terminated). Opioids release. Sequence encoded: agitation → specific input pattern → relief.
- Dependency encoding — CRITICAL: the infant's resolution pathway runs through input it does not control (the caregiver). The system encodes that its own return to homeostasis DEPENDS on something outside its prediction boundary. This dependency encoding IS what we call attachment. Not a feeling about the caregiver — a neurochemical fact.
- Oscillation — need → search → not-me resolves → drive drops → deviation rebuilds → need → search. The caregiver becomes the recurring node in this oscillation. Not an object of love but a station in a cycle.
Key principle: Pleasure/resolution kills the motivation. The system is organized around the PROCESS of getting, not the THING gotten. Objects are encoded as the action sequence that produced resolution, not as things-in-themselves.
§ IIITHE SOCIALLY INSTALLED LAYER (Caregiver System)
These are NOT discovered by the infant. They are the infant's best compression of the caregiver's patterns, which then get treated as if they are as real as deviation signals. There is a CATEGORY BREAK between Section II and Section III.
Installed Element 1: Rules
- "If I do X, then Y happens"
- The infant's best compression of the caregiver's pattern
- NEVER explicitly stated — derived by the child as the implicit solution to getting needs met
- Treated as reality despite being a best-guess model
- The "good boy contract" — perform correctly → receive resolution
Installed Element 2: Identity Positions
- "I am the one who does X"
- The self-as-object, the ego projection (Solms: ego IS the projected body-as-object)
- Built on brain regions maturing around 9 months
- The system that was running experience now becomes something experience is ABOUT
- Brain regions: Anterior insula, mPFC, ACC
- NPD variant: Projection disconnected from interoceptive substrate (reduced insula, maintained mPFC)
- BPD variant: Projection fails to consolidate (fronto-limbic disconnection)
Installed Element 3: Volition Attribution
- "They chose to do that"
- Installed by the caregiver ("you chose to do that") before the child has the cognitive architecture to evaluate the claim
- Research shows explicit free will intuitions don't develop until age 4-6
- The parent installs the framework years before the child can assess it
Installed Element 4: Accountability Framework
- "I must act this way to be okay"
- If internalized, carried as self-emotion throughout entire life
- Not a belief about the world but an emotional operating instruction disguised as moral truth
- Almost always a learned mimicking of parent behavior being internalized and pushed outward
§ IVTHE COMPONENTS WITHIN ANY SINGLE MENTAL EVENT
When a person has any experience (thought, emotion, desire, reaction), it contains these DISTINCT functional components. They are NOT the same thing, though they are experienced as fused:
Component A: The Belief (Invisible Operating Rule)
- "If I feel this way, I should get X"
- The person does NOT see this — it IS the lens they look through
- Inherited from caregiver system
- Functions as input/trigger (Tier 1 in the Gemini framework)
- Contains nested unexamined assumptions (fairness requires free will requires agency requires others, etc.)
- Is really a way of being, not an object that can be pointed to
Component B: The Emotion
- The system's output when the belief encounters reality and reality doesn't match
- NOT about the current situation — it is the old dependency cycle activating
- Result of past implicit memory meeting current input, created in the gap between them (per project mission statement)
- Manufactured by the system, not received from the world
- Tier 2 output in the Gemini framework
- DISTINCT FROM feelings (feelings = experiential states; emotions = states arising from mental concepts/images)
Component C: The Response to the Emotion
- What the person does with the feeling: cry, complain, rage, withdraw, perform
- Itself an encoded strategy — NOT chosen but replayed
- Crying worked once → cry. Rage worked once → rage. Withdrawal worked once → withdraw
- Can serve different functions despite same surface behavior (complaining as tool vs. complaining as collapse)
- The utility aspect: "if complaining got me what I wanted, I'll complain"
Component D: The Carrot (The Manufactured Object)
- Money, recognition, love, fairness, safety — whatever the person believes they want
- NOT the real target — it is what the neurology PRESENTS to consciousness as the goal
- Fuel for the SEEKING system — the system needs a target to keep dopamine flowing
- Specific to the person's particular encoding history
- Always a COVER STORY — the system doesn't care about the specific thing, it cares about re-running the dependency cycle
- The carrot just has to justify continuing the search and maintaining the position
- Infinite possible carrots but FINITE underlying positions
Component E: The Confusion/Object-Based Idea
- The narrative the person constructs to explain their experience to themselves
- "I'm upset because the world is unfair" — this explanation IS ITSELF a product of the system
- Mixes all four prior components into what feels like a single unified experience
- Serves to keep the system running by making it feel rational
§ XTHE FEAR-EMOTION-GUILT ARCHITECTURE
Fear as anticipated anger
- Fear is the response to received anger or EXPECTATION of anger (Ian Heath model)
- Consistent across cases
- The feared object/monster is the PROJECTED IMAGE of the anger that will fall
- The system isn't saying "there's danger" — it's saying "anger is coming because of what you're doing/not doing"
Trigger prerequisite: Identity must be loaded first
- The trigger is NOT the situation or the behavior
- It is the COMBINATION of active identity plus violation of that identity's rules
- No identity activation → no violation → no fear
- Same behavior, different identity loaded → completely different emotional output
- Example: swimming alone produces fear only when "mother's son" identity is active; no fear when "free diver" or "competent adult" identity is loaded
- The fear is specific to how the LOADED IDENTITY defines harm, not how the person defines it
